چکیده

General theory of neutron scattering (elastic and inelastic) is presented. It is applicable for the whole domain of slow neutrons and includes as limiting cases existing theories for thermal and cold neutrons and for elastic scattering of UCN. New expression for inelastic scattering cross section for UCN is proposed. It differs from the usually used by proper account of re-scattering processes. Evidence for small heating and cooling of UCN is given. PACS number(s): 25.40.Fq, 61.12.Bt

Polarized Fermi gases

Recently, two experiments, reported in Science[1, 2], have studied a polarized ultra-cold degenerate Fermi gas. This is a very new area that has attracted a great amount of interest from widely varying fields ranging from condensed matter physics, atomic molecular and optical physics, to particle and astro physics. As polarized Fermi gases have been demonstrated to be stable near the resonance,...

Quark matter in neutron stars

According to quantum chromodynamics, matter at ultra-high density and low temperature is a quark liquid, with a condensate of Cooper pairs of quarks near the Fermi surface (“color superconductivity”). This paper reviews the physics of color superconductivity, and discusses some of the proposed signatures by which we might detect quark matter in neutron stars.

In situ ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering study of the solution-mediated formation and growth of nanocrystalline ceria

Many research topics in condensed matter research, materials science and the life sciences make use of crystallographic methods to study crystalline and non-crystalline matter with neutrons, X-rays and electrons. Articles published in the Journal of Applied Crystallography focus on these methods and their use in identifying structural and diffusioncontrolled phase transformations, structure–pro...

Landau Ginzburg Theory and Nuclear Matter at Finite Temperature

Based on recent studies of the temperature dependence of the energy and specific heat of liquid nuclear matter, a phase transition is suggested at a temperature ∼ .8 MeV. We apply Landau Ginzburg theory to this transition and determine the behaviour of the energy and specific heat close to the critical temperature in the condensed phase. The existence of an energy gap in the spectrum of even-ev...
